Dave Gribble’s Remarkable All England Triumph

Double Gold at 67: Dave Gribble’s Remarkable All England Triumph

A Prestigious Stage

At the 2026 All England Seniors (Masters) Badminton Championships, held at Hatfield University from 10–12 April, Dave Gribble delivered a truly outstanding performance. Organised by Badminton England, the event is widely regarded as the “Wimbledon" of Masters Badminton and as an open event, attracting leading players from across the world in age groups ranging from 35+ to 75+.

Competing in the Over 65 category at the age of 67, Dave achieved an exceptional double, winning both the Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles titles, an accomplishment that highlights both his quality and longevity in the sport.

Two Titles, Two Different Challenges

In the Men’s Doubles, Dave partnered with Nicholas Goode. Even as top seeds their campaign was hard-fought from the outset, including a demanding three-set match in the opening round, until they progressed through the draw to reach the final, where they faced Denmark’s Claus Andersen and Jens Dall-Hansen. In a high-quality contest, Dave and Nicholas secured a 2-1 victory (21–16, 18–21, 21–13).

In the Mixed Doubles, Dave teamed up with Linda Wood and entered the draw unseeded. Facing strong opposition throughout, including pairs who had already eliminated top seeds, they produced a series of composed performances, but the semi-final proved to be the toughest test, requiring focus and tactical discipline to progress further. In the final, they defeated Ross Gladwin and Susan Sheen 2-0 (21–14, 21–19) to secure the title.

Winning both events required adapting to very different styles of play, underlining Dave’s versatility and experience.

A Career-Defining Moment

This achievement holds particular significance for Dave. Having previously reached the Men’s Doubles final with the same partner but fallen short, this victory marked a long-awaited breakthrough.

“It’s a once in a lifetime achievement,” he said. “I was tearful after, especially coming back from injury. It’s the highest achievement in my career.”

A Lifetime in Badminton

Dave’s badminton journey began at the age of 12 at Kingsdown Junior Club in Bristol. Over the years, he has represented his profesion at the Avon & Somerset Police Force, his county Avon, and his country at Masters level. Dave continues to train and compete regularly at Backwell School.

Among his previous highlights is winning the European Masters Men’s Doubles title in Slovenia in 2016 (O55 category). However, this latest success at the All England Masters stands out as one of the most significant achievements of his career.

His commitment to the sport remains evident in his training routine, which includes three badminton sessions per week, two spin sessions, along with swimming and gym work.

“I just love badminton and I love competing. Everyone likes to win.”

Resilience and Mindset

Dave’s success is also a story of resilience. In recent years, he has faced a number of injuries, making this return to top form even more impressive. His mindset has played a key role throughout his career.

“Never give in,” he says, a philosophy reflected in his ability to come from behind and manage high-pressure situations through experience and composure.

His recovery is also a testament to the support of specialists like Dele Bamisaye at Cleve Chiro & Physio Centre, who continues to help him maintain the physical condition required to compete at this level.

A Long Standing Partnership with Karakal

Dave has been associated with Karakal since the early days of the company, a relationship spanning almost 40 years. Having previously been under contract with the brand, he has remained closely connected to Karakal, reflecting a long-standing personal and professional relationship.

He continues to use Karakal equipment, including his trusted M-Tec 85 ISO racket, which he pairs with the Karakal PU Super Grip Air, valued for it's consistent, tacky feel.

This enduring partnership reflects shared values of reliability, performance, and a lifelong commitment to racket sports.

Inspiring Through Longevity

Dave’s achievement is a powerful example of what can be accomplished through dedication, enjoyment, and perseverance. Competing regularly on the Masters circuit and in county events, he remains deeply involved in the sport.

His approach is simple: enjoy the game, take it seriously, and show respect to opponents. It is a mindset that continues to deliver results while setting an example for players of all ages.

Looking Ahead

There is no sign of Dave slowing down. His focus now turns to the European Masters Championships in Sardinia in September 2026, and will then target the World Masters Championships in 2027.

He also hopes to return to defend his All England titles next year, building on what is already a remarkable achievement.

Dave Gribble’s double gold at the All England Masters is not just a personal milestone, but a reflection of enduring passion, commitment, and excellence in badminton.
